Risk and backtesting

Risk and Research on the Whole Market.

A risk model, a surveillance alert or a backtest is only as good as the price data under it. Blocksize aggregates 70+ exchanges into one price per pair, filters outlier trades and excludes venues that drift from the market. The result makes off-market prints visible and gives research a clean history.

Why single-venue data drifts

Single-venue data drifts from the market: even the deepest exchanges sit within market-wide fair value only about 25% of the time. A backtest built on one exchange inherits its gaps and outliers, and a book marked against one venue inherits that venue's noise. A wrong price is a blown position.

Waiting for price data...

Marking a book against a single venue inherits that venue's noise

The aggregated price across the whole market is the mark that holds up in a review. For surveillance, a market-wide reference makes off-market prints visible: a trade far from the aggregated price stands out on any venue. The alerting stays in the firm's own system; the feed supplies the reference. For research, the same feed gives one consistent history per pair across venues, with the methodology published, so a backtest result can be traced to its data source.

Backtesting in Crypto: Why Your Data Source Decides the Result

Every backtest produces a number, and most of them are wrong for reasons that have nothing to do with the strategy. Only about one in four coins listed in 2014 survived to 2021, corrected price series hide errors a live strategy would have hit, and data from a single exchange teaches a strategy that exchange's quirks instead of the market. This article covers all four biases, with the academic evidence behind each, and sets out the five properties backtest data needs.

Real-Time Crypto Data Aggregation: How It Works

Every provider claims real-time data. Almost none explain what it means when the same asset trades on seventy exchanges at once, each with its own format, its own limits and its own clock. This article walks through the engineering: what a single exchange feed actually sends, why seventy of them don't simply add up, how much reported volume is real, which filters remove bad prints and drifting venues, and why the fastest price is never the most complete one.

Crypto Market Data: A Complete Guide

Most guides to crypto market data are a list of data types, and this one is too, in its first half: trade data, order books at three depths, OHLCV, derived prices, reference rates, derivatives data, on-chain data and metadata, plus how each is delivered and where crypto breaks the expectations of anyone arriving from equities. The second half covers what the lists leave out: where a price actually comes from, the five questions that separate a single-exchange quote from a filtered market-wide aggregate, and what each user group needs the data to answer.

Risk and backtesting FAQ

VWAP and bid/ask snapshots across all pairs. The depth depends on the plan, see Pricing.

The venue rules are in the published methodology. For RWA feeds, the contributing exchanges per instrument are listed by the bidask_instruments endpoint.

A market-wide reference makes them visible. The alerting logic stays in the firm's own system.

Yes, as trade events across venues, next to the aggregated feeds.

Coins that were delisted drop out of single-venue histories. About 1 in 4 coins listed in 2014 were still listed at the end of 2021. A market-wide history across venues keeps more of that record.
